BROOKS WINS TWU ELECTION

Transport Workers Union Local 234 will have a new president and executive board starting this Sunday.

Jeff Brooks defeated incumbent TWU 234 President Jean Alexander 1,526-1,446 to win the three-year term. William Simmons finished in third place with 831 votes. Among the comments from a press release issued by the "Brooks Unity Team":

"I am pleased that our members have elected me and our entire Team," stated Jeff Brooks.

"Two thirds of the members agreed that it is time to put the past behind us and embark on a new path - a path that will benefit our members and the riding public.

"When safety is improved, we will all benefit. When service is improved, we will all benefit. When responsible funding is secured, we will all benefit," stated Brooks.

The current SEPTA contract between Local 234 and SEPTA will expire in March 2005. The Brooks Team was elected to ensure that the union and its members are prepared to negotiate the best possible contract - a contract that will guarantee the rights and benefits of members and which meets the needs of the riding public, their employers and the greater Philadelphia economy.
